Prominent filmmakers and producers of Bollywood have come forward against the censorship of the upcoming film Udta Punjab. The film is scheduled to be released on June 17, 2016 with A certificate. The film written and directed by Abhishek Chaubey casts Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Kareena Kapoor in lead roles. The film addresses the issue of drug addiction among the youths of Punjab. The film is produced by Anurag Kashyap, Ekta Kapoor and Vikas Bahl under the banner of Balaji Motion Pictures and Phantom Films.
In a press conference held yesterday Mukesh Bhatt, Mahesh Bhatt, Satish Kaushik, Sudhir Mishra, Imtiaz Ali, Zoya Akhtar and Rahul Dholakia protested strongly against the censorship of Udta Punjab. Mukesh Bhatt demanded the expulsion of Pahlaj Nihalani as CBFC chief. The CBFC has proposed 89 cuts and a different title (not mentioning Punjab).
The film is currently waiting for a certificate from CBFC. The producers of the film have moved to the Bombay High Court and the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal against CFBC.
